A little bit of rewinding

So most people who know anything about us at all, have heard the story of how we met. But simply for the sake of posterity, I'm going to retell it now.

May 18, 2011

NCAA season was in full swing (I just happened to be following that year because of the Jimmer craze), and my sister and I were gonna get dinner and catch the game. She was on her way to my place while I ran to grab some Cafe Rio (mmm). Got in and out just fine except for the fact that the parking lot was packed and I had to start inching my way out of my stall. A car was waiting to take my spot so I kept inching... checking both sides.... inching... crunch. Someone had come around the corner while I was looking the other way and I backed into his car. Grrr.

So I get out of my car and assess the damage. Then I look up to see the driver- a very good looking guy, of course- go and asses my car while asking if I was okay. I told him I was fine (albeit incredibly embarrassed) and asked the same of him. He said he was fine and that his car was too, even though there was a dent. He said it was an old car anyway and he couldn't tell one dent from the rest. I told him I would feel better if he at least took my info in case he changed his mind. He looked at me like I was crazy but allowed me to anyway.

I scratched my number and insurance company down on a paper and we said our farewells. A few minutes later I got a text from him apologizing if he had just ruined sushi night. (So sweet!) I got back and relayed the whole story (including the fact of how cute he was) to my sister and roommies.

The rest of the night I kept reliving the scene and kicking myself for being such a flake. The next morning was Stake Temple Day and my roommies and I were planning to spent a good portion of the day there. As we were getting ready, I admitted to Jessica that I kept thinking about him; to which she replied, "Text him!!"

What!? No way. I'm not like that. The guy always makes the first move. But she made a valid point by saying, "What do you have to lose? Just send him a message and if he thinks you're a psychotic stalker then he won't respond and you'll never see him again. If he's interested..... (insert big cheesy grin)"

But how was I to know that he wasn't the crazy one??... Facebook. Yup. I facebook stalked him. For some strange reason his account was totally open and I could see all of his pictures that day even though he said he's always kept his settings private. Divine intervention? Maybe.

It was there that I saw a sliver of the life of this guy I backed into and was totally impressed and beyond intrigued. But that only made my situation even worse because now I was even more interested. That's when Jessica grabbed my phone and said, "Okay, what are you going to say?" She wasn't taking no for an answer. So after really going out on a limb, and totally putting my neck out there, the text went something like this:

"So I still feel really dumb about yesterday. Doesn't help that the guy I hit was so handsome. Thanks for being so great about it."

Send.

Then a rush of immediate panic and "senders remorse" over the thought of just telling a complete stranger that I thought he was handsome! I'm not like that! The guy makes the first move, what was I thinking!?

Too late. It's been sent. And off we went to the temple where I was able to distract myself from the mortification of it all.

Much later that day, once we got out of the temple, I turned my phone on and to my utter astonishment there were two text messages from him!!! TWO! The first said something along the lines of:

"Oh, don't worry about it. Truth be told, I wish we would have met under different circumstances."

I can't believe this!

And the second was even more shocking:

"I might be crazy but... could I give you a call some time?"

Uh... yeah!! :) We won't go into the girly details of my reaction but to say the least, I was pleasantly surprised. To cut to the end of the beginning and beginning of the end, we talked on the phone the following week, went on a date a few weeks later (I was getting close to finals, had a work study job, volunteered and the hospital, and was VT coordinator for my ward... life was crazy), and were engaged the following August.

Man am I glad that I'm a flake and that I sent that ridiculous text. :)

True Story!
